ISO 9001:2000

ISO 9001:2000 "Quality management systems - Requirements", Third edition 2000-12-15 replaced ISO 9001:1994, ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994 on December 15, 2000. ISO 9001 is in the process of being revised and a new version (known as ISO 9001:2005) is expected to be released in 2008.

The document 'ISO 9001:2000' "Quality management systems - Requirements" is published by the International Standards Organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is available in electronically from www.iso.ch

ISO 9001:2000 identifies the management system elements required to enhance customer satisfaction, and ensure the effective control of product or/and service quality. Flowcharts are provided below identifying the management system elements and their interconnection.

ISO 9001:2000 Synopsis - ISO 9001:2000, Section 0.1 clarifies that adoption of ISO 9001:2000 "should be a strategic decision of an organization", and "implementation of an organization's quality management system is influenced by varying needs, particular objectives, and products provided, the processes employed and the size and structure of an organization". I simple terms, each organizations method for complying with the requirements in ISO 9001:2000 will be unique to that organization.

In essence ISO 9001:2000 requires an organization to identify its customer's needs. Frame the customer needs within its quality policy, define objectives to achieve enhanced customer satisfaction. Plan to achieve its objectives and meet requirements specified by the customer (during placing of an order or by other communication such as meetings, surveys, focus groups, etc.). Implement the plans and monitor and measure them for effectiveness. Analyze the data from the monitoring and measuring processes to provide management with factual information to change and improve the system to further enhance customer satisfaction.
